MTU Junior Kaylee Meyers Awarded Goldwater Scholarship

For the second consecutive year, a Michigan Tech scholar has been awarded 1 of the
nation’s most prestigious undergraduate exploration scholarships.

Kaylee Meyers, a 3rd-year scholar at Michigan Technological University, has received
1 of the nation’s optimum accolades for college undergraduates.
The biomedical engineering major from Essexville, Michigan is the 12th Michigan Tech scholar to obtain the
prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

Founded in 1989 by Congress to honor the late Arizona senator and administered
by the
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Instruction Basis, Goldwater scholarships are awarded to college sophomores and juniors. The awards
are based mostly on educational benefit, exploration working experience and intent to pursue a occupation in
science, engineering or mathematics.

As component of the choice method, faculties nominate up to 4 pupils who intend
to pursue a occupation in exploration and have at least a three. GPA. As 1 of 396 recipients
chosen from approximately five,000 nominees, Meyers will obtain a economical award
to be applied on charges like tuition, books, and place and board for her senior year.

Assisting to Heal

Meyers created a “passion for engineering” while included with Very first Robotics in
significant college. “But I also truly preferred to work in the health care discipline, so biomedical
engineering was the ideal combination of the two,” she explained.

Meyers’ exploration focuses on engineered biomaterials. “More specifically, injectable
biomaterials that could be applied to accelerate wound healing in wounded tendons,” she
explained.

“Kaylee’s work has led to novel knowledge relating to how injectable biomaterials can be
applied to management mobile and molecular mechanisms included in tendon maintenance,” explained Meyer’s
exploration advisor, Rupak Rajachar, a principal lecturer in biomedical engineering at
Michigan Tech. “These conclusions are the basis for 1 of two to start with-creator manuscripts
she is currently writing.”

Meyers’ second manuscript is made up of the outcomes of her artistic initiatives to aid make
a desk-prime ultrasound method for use in specific drug supply from biomaterials.

Meyers’ and Rajachar’s exploration was not too long ago awarded a second grant from the Countrywide
Institutes of Health (NIH) to work on incorporating focused ultrasound into the exploration
via a collaborative job with Michigan Tech alumnus Eli Vlaisavljevich, a earlier
Goldwater Scholarship recipient, member of the Engineered Biomaterials Lab group
and existing college at Virginia Tech.

In addition to the NIH grant and Goldwater Scholarship, Meyers’ exploration has received
support from the Portage Health Basis and the Charles Steger World wide Internship
Award from the Focused Ultrasound Basis. She explained such funding for undergraduate
exploration is critical.

“I consider outside funding is essential for the undergraduate exploration we do in the
lab, as it permits us to work on solving truly interesting engineering issues,”
she explained.

An Early Start out

Meyers’ Michigan Tech journey commenced at the University’s Summer season Youth Program (SYP).
When she to start with established foot on campus in 2016, she could not foresee the path she would
just take, but she realized from the begin she was at a distinctive place.

“The summer just after my junior year of significant college, I attended MTU’s Ladies in Engineering
Program,” Meyers explained. “I discovered a good deal about engineering and experienced a probability to examine
the campus and surrounding place.”

A self-described “avid outdoorswoman” who enjoys to hike, bicycle, ski, trail operate and
kayak, she realized that Tech’s teachers and locale would be a very good suit. A number of months
later on, she learned that the “good fit” extended to the classroom and lab as very well.

“As a senior, I attended MTU Preview Working day, where by I fulfilled my exploration advisor, Dr. Rajachar,
and his Engineered Biomaterials Lab group,” she explained. “Through them, I discovered about
the close campus group and what undergraduate exploration was like at Tech. It strengthened
my selection to appear here.”

Continuing a Happy Tradition

Meyers is Michigan Tech’s fourth Goldwater Scholarship recipient in the earlier five
many years and the second consecutive MTU scholar to be so honored. Third-year organic
sciences major Tessa Steenwinkel gained the scholarship last year.

Meyer’s lengthy-time period goals are to earn her PhD in biomedical engineering and eventually
operate a exploration lab of her very own as a principal investigator and college professor.

“I believe Tech is pretty very good at promoting students from all backgrounds in STEM fields,
primarily via youth outreach and our supportive campus group.”Kaylee Meyers

Rajachar explained it is interesting to see the probable broader affect Meyers can have both
as a graduate scholar and potential mentor to the up coming era of pupils in STEM
fields.

“She acknowledges that the biggest present any scientific mentor can supply is their
time and an environment that empowers younger pupils to believe in hard work and their
very own potential to remedy issues,” he explained.

Meyers is in amazing business as the fifth Michigan Tech biomedical engineering
major to obtain a Goldwater Scholarship, additional than any other self-discipline at the University,
and the 3rd to be mentored by Rajachar.

Vlaisavljevich, who gained the scholarship in 2009, is an assistant professor of biomedical
engineering at Virginia Tech and has recognized a laboratory acquiring therapeutic
ultrasound resources. 2012 scholarship recipient Hal Holmes is a guide engineer at Conservation
X Labs, acquiring slicing-edge genetic testing technology for conservation.

Rajachar is self-confident Meyers will dwell up to the significant normal established by her predecessors.
“I definitely believe that Kaylee can meet up with or exceed the results of any former scholar
from my lab,” he explained. “I emphasize their achievements hence far as experts not
only to convey the significance of the Goldwater and the energy of my belief in
Kaylee, but additional importantly to recognize that every single of them also serves as a mentor
to Kaylee, assisting her as she operates diligently toward meeting what I believe is her
good promise as a scientist and engineer.”

When the time comes for Meyers to mentor pupils of her very own, she’ll replicate on her
personalized function model. “I want to thank my exploration advisor, Dr. Rajachar, for providing
me and several other pupils the option to get included in undergraduate exploration
in an encouraging and intellectually stimulating environment,” she explained. “I am pretty
privileged to have him as a mentor.”

Michigan Technological University is a community exploration college, house to additional than
seven,000 pupils from 54 countries. Founded in 1885, the University offers additional than
a hundred and twenty undergraduate and graduate diploma plans in science and technology, engineering,
forestry, company and economics, overall health professions, humanities, mathematics, and
social sciences. Our campus in Michigan’s Higher Peninsula overlooks the Keweenaw Waterway
and is just a number of miles from Lake Exceptional.
