Will Cantrell is taking experiences garnered for the duration of virtually two decades at Michigan
Technological College into his new position as affiliate provost and dean of the Graduate
School—a career he calls “a privilege.”

Final month, Jacqueline Huntoon, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs,
introduced that Cantrell, then the affiliate dean of the Graduate School and exiting
director of the Earth, Planetary and Place Sciences Institute (EPSSI), would believe his new position as dean on July one.

“It is a privilege to be entrusted with this position, reported Cantrell. I am grateful for the aid and mentorship that I have been given from my good friends
and colleagues more than the earlier 19 decades at Michigan Tech. I would not have been in the
position to succeed in this work without the need of that aid.”

He succeeds Pusphalatha Murthy, who is operating with Cantrell to guarantee a clean changeover.
Though no lengthier Graduate School dean, Murthy will keep on to serve on the Graduate
Instruction Advisory Board of the American Chemical Culture and stay lively with the
Council of Graduate Educational institutions and the Countrywide Science Foundation.

A heritage of leadership

As Cantrell starts his 20th calendar year at Michigan Tech, things glimpse a good deal diverse than
they did in 2001. You could even say that the state of affairs is considerably diverse
than in 2019. But, as the University plans for a slide semester beginning for the duration of the
COVID-19 pandemic, Cantrell’s peers are confident in his qualities as a leader and
an educator.

“Dr. Cantrell has a extended heritage of supplying thoughtful leadership that, combined
with his perfectly-attained track record as an effective researcher and trainer, make him perfectly
organized to believe this vital position,” Huntoon reported in her June announcement.

A powerful mixture

Cantrell reported the Graduate School performs an vital position at the College, noting that graduate instruction at Michigan
Tech is a exclusive mixture of the queries Why? and How? with theory and observe. “That’s a powerful mixture, and our learners are valued
by sector and by other academic institutions due to the fact of it,” he reported.

Cantrell has found his share of difficulties for the duration of his tenure at Michigan Tech, but
possibly none as spectacular as the COVID-19 pandemic. He reported the pandemic is a sizeable
demo from various perspectives.

“Of class, there are the financial pressures,” he reported. Our learners and their people are facing them, the state is facing them and as a
consequence, so is Michigan Tech.

Cantrell’s other illustration is anything that will be going on throughout MTU’s campus
this slide.

“The social distancing that is essential to maintain the basic safety of our learners, staff
and school also tends to make instruction in the classroom and the lab extra hard. Yet
we will have to keep on to stay into our shared values of group, respect, diversity and
inclusion,” he reported.

Cantrell joined Tech’s Physics Section in 2001 after earning his PhD from the College of Alaska Fairbanks and finishing
a postdoc in chemistry at Indiana College. His analysis passions consist of atmospheric
science, cloud and aerosol physics and chemistry. He is a member of the Michigan Tech
crew that built and produced the Pi Cloud Chamber, which simulates cloud disorders and lets for experimentation which include turbulence
and varying aerosol sizes and compositions.

In 2013, Cantrell was named Distinguished Professor of the 12 months by the Presidents
Council, Point out Universities of Michigan.
